We first visited Milfontes four years ago. And after only a week, we knew that we wanted to call this special place home. The beauty of the natural landscape, proximity to stunning beaches, and warmth of its people enchanted us.


It took us four years to turn our dream into reality. And now we want to share it with you. At Kalumi Aparthotels, the gentle pulse of nature and embrace of quiet luxury create the perfect harmony for those seeking to unwind and reconnect. Everything about Kalumi Aparthotels is deliberate, from setting it on a quiet side street next to the local farmer's market to ensuring that we keep occupancy low to preserve guests' privacy. We want our guests to feel like they have their own luxury beach apartment in Portugal.

We are still developing partnerships and hope to offer wellness retreats soon. In the meantime, we wanted to share some particular delights of Vila Nova de Milfontes and the surrounding area.

The outdoors

  • Hiking: Explore the stunning coastal trails of O Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, the Rota Vicentina's namesake, providing breathtaking views. We are part of the Rota Vicentina Association, so we can help you plan your perfect ramble. We have association maps in our apartments too.

  • Beach and SUP yoga: Participate in Qigong or yoga sessions on the beach. Both really help clear our minds.

  • Surfing: Take surfing lessons with some of the fabulous local instructors or rent one of our Donald Takayama longboards to catch an amazing sunset session. We'll share our secret spots if you're nice.


Wellness and spa treatments

  • Massage therapy: Treat yourself to a relaxing massage at one of the local wellness centers or on the beach at Praia da Franquia. Hearing the sound of lapping waves in the background can't be beat.

  • Facials and skincare: Enjoy facial treatments that use products sourced from the very best of the region, promoting natural skin health.


Healthy eating

  • Private chef: Book dinner with our private chef. He hails from New York City where he helped run top kitchens at the Union Square Hospitality Group and City Winery. He'll work with you to create an evening of delicious surprises with the freshest local ingredients in the privacy of your own apartment. Just make sure to give us 72 hours of advance notice.

  • Local farm boxes: We provide these at check-in. We'll stock your refrigerator with undiscovered goodness, like wines that our friend Luis makes at Herdade do Cebolal. He blows us away every time we visit his biodynamic operation near Cercal. His natural wines, including some aged at the bottom of the ocean floor (!), are sublime. Make sure to order your box at least 72 hours in advance of your stay.

  • Cooking classes: Join a Cambodian cooking class with our friend Sokhony Hok of Temple Spicy to learn how to prepare the foods of her homeland, using ingredients that a local farmer grows specially for her.


Cultural experiences

  • Art and craft workshops: Take a pottery or basket weaving class to learn traditional Alentejo techniques.

  • Local markets: Visit local markets to explore everything the area has to offer and connect with the vibrant community. Our friend Ana Paula (Cookie) makes delicious jams and jellies that she sells at the local market at Casa do Benfica on Sundays until noon.
